Good Spring Trail

The WLB Group designed a trailhead and 2.3-mile long trail that provides unique opportunities for visitors to explore Nevada’s history and natural landscape. The project includes multiple accessible loop trails, interpretive exhibits, and numerous site amenities. Our approach was to embrace the vernacular landscape and integrate railroad and mining themes into aspects of the design. This gave historical identity to the shade structure, bridges, wayfinding signs, and interpretive media. The success of our design has resulted in Goodsprings Trail being published in popular travel journals as a unique destination despite being in a remote part of Nevada.

The trail begins at the trailhead, complete with a parking area, gathering space, shade structure, information kiosk and restroom. The trail system gains 600 feet in elevation as it leads visitors to five interpretive sites and coincides with the abandoned Yellow Pine Mine Railroad alignment before proceeding up the adjacent ridgeline. A custom foot bridge resembling the actual train engine used in the 1930’s was designed to cross one of the dry washes along the railroad alignment. The interpretive sites use displays that help visitors understand the railroad history, local geology, plant life, mining history, and the role the early settlers played in the development of Goodsprings. Original wayfinding trail markers and directional signs were designed to reinforce historical themes and fit into the surrounding desert. Additional care was taken to preserve the native desert environment while providing visitor access to the hills surrounding the Goodsprings valley.
